Athlete Academic Requirements

• In order to participate on a team, students must complete a daily session of the Academic Power Hour (which provides tutorial services and assistance with homework), maintain positive behavior, and satisfy all academic requirements.
• Each student is required to submit a weekly progress report which reports students’ academic and behavior progress during the week. Most students do better academically and behaviorally during the season than outside of their season.

VHSL Physical forms for Student Athletes

• All student athletes must have a physical completed on a VHSL Form. Forms are available in the school office and online at the Virginia High School League website.

AFRICAN DANCING

• Do you enjoy dancing? Learn African culture through dance. It’s a great way to exercise and have fun!

AFRICAN DRUMMING

• Join one of the most exciting clubs in Virginia. African drumming provides students with an opportunity to learn the basic principles of drumming, including its cultural significance, the ways it serves as a communication tool, and a variety of rhythms.

ART QUEST

• The ArtQuest program is designed for students who are identified as gifted or talented in the visual arts. In ArtQuest, special art lessons and activities are offered weekly after school.

BUFORD CHEF CLUB

• Join us this fall for cooking club! We will learn basic cooking skills from harvesting fresh produce in our schoolyard garden to chopping, stirring, sautéing and baking in the kitchen. Each week we will prepare a fresh, healthy, low cost meal to sample and share.

COOKING CLUB

• Want to learn how to cook healthy meals and snacks? Then this club is for you! During our time together we will talk about how to make healthy decisions when it comes to the food we eat and will practice what we learn in new and fun recipes each week. Bring your appetite for trying new healthy foods!

STAGE LEFT THEATER CLUB

• Stage Left Theatre is a drama club that offers productions throughout the school year. The club is for emerging actors, developing stage producers, costume designers, and lighting directors.

FENCING CLUB

• The sport of fencing is the modern version of ancient sword fighting. Students will learn techniques, strategies, and develop agility as they explore this Olympic sport.

FUTURE ENGINEERS

• This club will provide multiple opportunities to explore the world of engineering concepts and design through interactive projects such as robotics and using advanced manufacturing to advance students’ knowledge of concepts.

THE FIT CLUB

• Have fun and stay in shape! Students will participate in a variety of fitness activities including: biking, weight lifting, aerobics, and circuit training. The goal is for students to be active after school and teach lifelong fitness skills. Students will keep a log of their activities and make goal sheets. Workout clothes and sneakers are required.

GIRL SCOUTS

• Buford and Walker have an active Girl Scout troop for middle school girls that meets twice a month in the evening. Contact Karen at ksleezer@aol.com for information.

IRON CHEF COOKING CLUBS

• Students work with local chefs to prepare scrumptious meals. Each cooking club will enter the Buford Iron Chef Competition, which is held at the Annual Fall Festival.

INTERNATIONAL CLUB

• Do you speak a foreign language? This club provides students with an opportunity to use their foreign language skills in an extracurricular manner and to create a sense of international community.

JUNIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

• The JNHS at Buford is very active with service projects throughout the school year. Please see our chapter’s web site for more information.

SCHOOLYARD GARDEN CLUB

• Enjoy working in the garden? Do you want to really know what you are eating? We’ll be harvesting and maintaining the Buford Schoolyard Garden, learning how to prepare the food that we grow, and planning for the next growing season. Members can participate on one or both day.

SCIENCE FAIR CLUB

• Do you like science? The Science Fair Club will offer students the opportunity to develop science projects for the Virginia Piedmont Regional Science fair competition in March. Using scientific inquiry, students will research, plan, and carry out experiments for the competition. Guest speakers and field experiences will be part of afternoon events.

SPRING VOLLEYBALL CLUB

• Designed to teach young ladies the rules of game, sportsmanship, and physical fitness through the developmental volleyball league. Teams compete with Albemarle County Parks & Recreation Teams throughout the Spring.

STUDENT COUNCIL ASSOCIATION (SCA)

• SCA members are elected by their peers and meet monthly to discuss strategies and activities to enhance the middle school experience for students at Buford. The club also sponsors activities to improve our community.

TINSLEY TENNIS PROGRAM

• Join one of the most exciting clubs at Buford. Students compete against other school clubs throughout the seasons. Learn the fundamentals of tennis as well as opportunities to improve your existing skills.

TROJAN NEWS TELECAST

• This club provides selected students an opportunity to produce, direct, write, and perform in our lunchtime news broadcast. Students will participate in the basic principles of video editing, green screen broadcasting, reporting, and behind-the-scenes work. Club will meet Monday after school and Wednesday mornings prior to school.

YEARBOOK

• Help capture the memories of this school year. During this year long club, students will take pictures at athletic events, pep rallies, school-sponsored activities, and community activities. Students will also help design the school yearbook.

YOUNG WOMEN LEADERS PROGRAM (YWLP)

• UVA students mentor middle school females to help develop self-esteem and leadership skills.
