Hello, awesome CMS families!!
We had an awesome first three days of school!!
Our 8th graders engaged in a collaborative building challenge in science!
Our 6th graders had to problem-solve how to cut a continuous circle from one sheet of paper that was the size of a hula hoop without taping or stapling!

Our 6th graders had to work as a team to keep the balloon from hitting the ground in P.E., and our 7th graders had to complete a series of movements when they met with their partners in the middle of the gym!
Here are the updates and information for this week:
1. Day colors this week - Below is each day's color for this week. Please note that we are on a continuous rotation between Orange and Black Days.
M 08.17.26 |
T 08.18.26 |
W 08.19.26 |
R 08.20.26 |
F 08.21.26 |
2. 9th Street entrance - Please do not use the 9th Street entrance during arrival/dismissal. This is a very hectic area with buses coming in, cars exiting the drop-off/pick-up line, and a LOT of children crossing the street. Other than buses, this is exit-only during arrival/dismissal times.
3. Intramural sports - This fall, CMS students have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports!! All sports are coed. Please fill out this form for your student to participate. Additional details can be found here and questions should be directed to Mrs. O'Connor at oconnoj1@charlottesvilleschools.org.
4. CMS in the news - In case you missed them, below are three news stories about CMS from this past week!
5. Upcoming MAP assessments - Below are our Fall MAP testing dates.
T 08.25.26 - 6th Grade Reading MAP
W 08.26.26 - 7th Grade Reading MAP
R 08.27.26 - 8th Grade Reading MAP
T 09.01.62 - 6th Grade Math MAP
W 09.02.26 - 7th Grade Math MAP
R 09.03.26 - 8th Grade Math MAP
6. Email your student - Students in Grades 7-12 have a Charlottesville City Schools Gmail address. Since cell phones and smart watches are “off and away, all day,” families may desire to use their student's email for communication during the day. In order to ensure your messages are not sent to "quarantine" by our very restrictive Gmail filter, tell your student to add your email address to their Gmail contact list. How to add a contact to Gmail.
7. New visitor management system - As part of our ongoing commitment to school safety, CCS is transitioning to Raptor Technologies for visitor management. The Raptor system allows us to keep better track of all guests entering our school while ensuring our campus remains secure. Here is what you need to know when visiting CMS this year:
Photo ID: Please bring your government-issued driver’s license or photo ID.
Self-Check-in iPad: You will scan the front and back of your driver’s license directly at the front desk iPad kiosk and take a quick photo. (Our front desk staff or admin tech will be right there if you need help or need manual entry!)
Set up your profile and enter your details in advance.
The app will generate a personal QR code.
When you arrive, simply scan your QR code at the iPad kiosk for a fast check-in!
8. Chromebooks this year (repeat) - CMS students will no longer be taking chromebooks home; rather, they will access devices as necessary within their classrooms, and those devices will remain at school. The one exception is for students who are enrolled in Early Morning P.E., as there is an online health component that requires students to complete modules at home.
9. Information from community partners -
Much love,
Summer Thompson
